Title |
Roman zoomorphic plate brooch (modern catch) |
||
Description |
English: A fragment from a cast copper-alloy zoomorphic possibly Roman plate brooch, adapted in the modern period (20th century) by the application of a new catch. Alternatively this is an entirely modern brooch but in an authentic Roman style.
The brooch is in the form of a horse in profile galloping to the right. The brooch is missing its pin, and the 'horse' much of its hind body, as well as its forelegs, due to old breaks. The mane and ear are delineated by diagonal grooves. The eye is formed of two crescentic grooves seemingly filled with white enamel. There is a possible transverse line at the mouth. There are two main, thin cells within the body of the horse: one lowermost, the other above, with only its tip surviving. At the fore end there are five small, sub-rectangular cells which continue the line of the second main cell described. They can also be found on a broken horse brooch from Norfolk illustrated in Hattatt (2000, 358; ref. 1181) and also on brooches from Hampshire (ref. HAMP-851675) and Leicestershire recorded on this database (ref.: LEIC-4E2603); in the case of the latter they are enamelled. On the lower surface is a catch towards the front of the horse. As stated above, this is a modern catch of the rollover type that has been widely used from the mid 20th century. It is formed of an angled, double C-shape lug, with central pivoting disc with a pair of knops to aid movement. It is of a red-brown colour and, along with other parts of the lower surface, appears to have traces of gilding. By contrast, the upper surface retains traces of tinning. As well as its losses the brooch has suffered some further damage to the head which has been bent downwards. |
