English: Royal Air Force Operations in the Middle East and North Africa, 1939-1943.
Flight Sergeant A B Downing (pilot, left), and Sergeant J T Lyons (radar operator, right), a successful night-fighter crew of No. 600 Squadron RAF, smile for the photographer at Bone, Algeria, on the day after they shot down five Junkers Ju 52 transport aircraft in ten minutes. Downing and Lyons, attached to No. 153 Squadron RAF at the time, intercepted the German formation while on a patrol 30 miles south of Cagliari, Sardinia in the early morning of 30 April 1943. They were awarded the DFM for this sortie and commissioned, and subsequently achieved another seven victories over Italy before their tour of operations expired.
