Location: Winton, Queensland
Description: Winton is located in Central Queensland, 1400km North West of Brisbane. It is the major town in a cattle and sheep raising region. Originally known as Pelican Waterhole, it was renamed Winton by Robert Allen, the first postmaster. The town of Winton was gazetted in 1879. Winton is best known as the place where Banjo Paterson wrote ‘Waltzing Matilda’, and the first performance of that song.
