Mais Rubens a encorepris à Tartiste romain, pour ainsi dire, le personnelentier de son Olympe chrétien : Dieu le Père, unSaturne vénérable, sans autre caractéristique que salongue barbe blanche : le Christ, un Jupiter au torseélégant et vigoureux; les apôtres, cheveux et barbes

La Descente de Croix (de 1611 a 1614)Cathédrale dAnvers. RUBENS 29 en copeaux; et surtout le groupement des SaintesFamilles ; la Madone, aimable, les paupières baisséessur un bambin frisé et grassouillet, et, dans lombredu second plan, saint Joseph, le menton dans lamain, méditatif et insignifiant. Rubens a seulementrapproché toutes ces figures de notre humanité dechair et de sang ; il les a un peu transformées à laflamande ; mais cétait par une nécessité de sa tech-nique, non pour satisfaire aux exigences dune poé-tique nouvelle. Venise surtout émerveilla Rubens par son artmagnifique et sensuel. Titien lui révéla le nu fémi-nin et sa beauté suprême, la splendeur des formespleines, léclat et la tendresse de la chair ambréeet chaude.
