r the purpose of obtaining the material with which to build the churcha brick yard was laid out on one of Mr. McCarthys claims. One hundredthousand bricks were made and burned for the church. Lumber was purchased and hauled from Grand Island, a distance of 150 miles. About thistime the people had spent over $800, but on account of the new railroad whichwas soon to be built through this section to the Black Hills, the church wasnot built at tliat time, as difficulties arose as to where the church should belocated. Some wanted it on their farms or near their homes, while otherswanted it built at Merna or Anselmo. The old settlers advocated building itat Dale. Father Hayes last visit to the mission found matters in a worsecondition than ever. In June, 1880, Father Hayes was appointed pastor ofthe church at OConnor, Greeley county, and his assistant, Father Haley, wasmade pastor of Kearney and its missions, which included Dale. Dale Church. Present Pastor Rev. Flanagan. prise, when he visited Dale mission, he found a divided people, caused by thedisputes as to the location of the church. After a consultation with theprincipal members of the mission it was decided to lay the matter beforeBishop OConnor. This was some time in July, 1886. In about a week BishopOConnor ordered the church to be built at Dale. It is easy to imagine thejoy of the old settlers, J. J. Downey, Robert McCarthy, William Couhig, ConFleischman, William AAalsh, Robert Kelley, George Grove, Chris. Grove,William Brookman and Chis. Micheal, when they learned of the bishopsdecision. A subscription list was opened and the necessary preparationsmade to begin work as soon as possible. The bricks already burned were ofpoor quality and not sufficient in quantity for a brick building.
