Text Appearing Before Image:
tadmirable picture, a throned Virgin and Child, by Marco Og- gione. The Virgin has all theintellectual dignity and characterof the school of Leonardo ; theChild bends towards St. Cather-ine, who kneels, presented bySt. Ambrose; on the other sidekneels St. Euphemia, presentedby John the Baptist; she has aninstrument of torture at her feetwhich looks like a saw. It isa magnificent example of the Mi-lanese school. In a picture by Simone Can-tarini she is represented stand-ing with her lion at her side, andpointing to the Virgin in glory :she wears a yellow tunic buttoneddown the front, a crimson mantle, and a white veil thrown over herhead. (Bologna Gallery.) In her church at Verona shestands over one of the altars, bearing her palm, and accom-panied by her lions. I havenever met with any historical pic-ture from her life. In the San Maurizio at Milan there is alovely figure of a female saint, crowned, with a sword in herbosom, called a St. Ursula, which I believe to represent St.Euphemia.

I must regretthat the martyrdom of Vivia Perpetua and Felicitas has neverbeen worthily treated ; in fact, I have never seen any ancientrepresentation of St. Perpetua, except in the mosaic at the inscription a forgery. See Critical Studies of the Italian Painters, vol. ilp. 175. There is a St. Euphemia by Mantegna in the Brera, Milan.) ST. PERPETUA 553 Kavenna ; and therefore, confining myself within the limitsassigned to this work, I shall not dwell upon her fate. Thewell-authenticated story of these two women, of their high-hearted constancy and meek fortitude, has-been told so beauti-fully by Mr. Milman, that I pass it over with the less regret;only observing, that as her history is accepted as authentic byProtestants, it rema
