Spring Valley Water Com-pany conceived the plan of storing the waterof the streams near the village, and, bymeans of a tunnel, diverting it to CrystalSprings Lake west of San Mateo. The landof Searsville was purchased from its ownersand work was begun on a concrete dam nearthe town. In the following year, when the waterbacked up against the dam and began toflood the adjoining low lands, the good folkof Searsville realized that it was time tomove. They made good use of the short timeat their disposal, and inside of a week not asingle house was left in Searsville. Somewere demolished, some were moved away,fences were torn down, gardens were up-rooted, and when the work of destructionwas complete there was hardly a vestige leftof the lively old village.
