, and he never returned. On the westcoast of South America he served under thegreat Lord Cochrane, afterwards the Earl of Dundonald. Too bad Don Roberto did nottake the trouble to write down an account ofthat exciting service! After a brilliant but stormy career in theBritish Navy, Lord Cochrane, in 1817, ac-cepted the invitation of the Chileans, thenin revolt against Spain, to take command oftheir naval forces. Two accounts have him set-ting foot ashore for the first time in Monte-rey ; one says that he deserted from the Eng-lish brig Colonel Young, the other that hearrived there in a hide-drogher. The matter is not important, except asshowing how difficult it is, after one hundredyears, to ascertain with accuracy the exactfacts about a California pioneer, even thoug
