The land is beautifully wooded and roll-ing, and so located that it is well protectedby the mountains to the west from the fogand winds to which the coast is exposed,giving a mild, even climate. A more beauti-ful background could not be imagined thanthese Santa Cruz Mountains, with theirwooded hills, always green, with blueshadows and marvelous cloud effects. Thenatural growth embraces a great variety oftrees: the stately redwood, the pine, thespreading oak, the aromatic bay, the euca-lyptus, and the red-branched madrone.
