By authority of the superior, a gen-eral cooking of food takes place, at a givenhour each day, in a large square in the mid-dle of the village; each family comes therefor its ration, which is apportioned with re-gard to the number of its members. They arealso given a certain quantity of raw provi-sions. Two or three families occupy the samehouse. In their free time, the Indians workin gardens that are given them; they raisetherein onions, garlic, cantaloupes, water-melons, pumpkins, and fruit trees. Theproducts belong to them and they can dis-pose of them as they see fit. In winter, bands of Indians come fromthe mountains to be admitted to the mission,but the greater part of them leave in thespring. They do not like the life at the mis-sion. They find it irksome to work continu-ally and to have everything supplied to themin abundance. In their mountains, they livea free and independent, albeit a miserableexistence.
