Summary edit

Description
English: Near the Ypres battlefield, Belgium, during World War I. The terrain is very hilly and rough with poor visibility in all directions. The valley between two of the hills is divided by a wall made of sandbags. There is a lot of debris and mud, especially in the front of the photo.

'Salient' is a military word describing an area of the military line which juts out.
Whilst many of the images were deliberately taken as propaganda, some, like these, simply document the everyday experience of war.
[Original reads: : 'Scene near the front in the YPRES Salient.']
