ican party. - Elected In 1855. Colfax was sent to Congress in1855 by the Republicans, His maidenspeech in Congress dealt with theKansas » Nebraska question. Thisspeech became the presidential cam-paign document and was circulatedthroughout the country. After thisspeech he became a leading figure inthe House and such editors as Dana,Sumner and Greeley praised him. Colfax continued his service inCongress until 1869, the last six yearsas speaker. In his campaign for election to thethirty-sixth Congress he was opposedby John C. Walker of the LaporteTimes, • a Democrat and former Whig.Concerning this campaign, Colfaxwrote his mother: I expect to makeeighty or ■ a hundred speeches if Ihave the health and strength. Col-fax traveled 2,400 miles, made 101speeches, probably three hours intength. The speakers met at SouthBend. Walker denied slanderingColfax in print. Colfax drew sev-eral papers from his pocket and gavethem to the audience. Walker at-tempted to push Colfax off the plat-term.

Early in the war Colfaxwas sent on secret missions to var-ious parts of the country for thegovernment. He helped organize andsquip three regiments of Indianae-olunteers. He made personal sacri-fices during the war and gave timeand money to the sick, wounded anddistressed. Badical Abolitionist. Colfax was a popular speaker ofthe House. His wife died twentyfears after their marriage. Hismother, stepfather and sister cameto Washington to live with him. Hismother, writing to a friend, concern-ing one of their receptions, said:Last Friday we received a thou-sand people in the drawing room. Wehave refreshments, ccffee, cake andlea cream, not a drop of wine orKquor. It is the talk of the citythat never has a speaker had suchreceptions.
