Itwould appear as if the genius of history was concentrated upon the annals ofthe Church, when arose quarrels and disputes as keen as those which wereformerly provoked by politics alone. This new kind of history seems betteradapted to Greek literature, though three or four of the Latin writers appearto have preserved the best traditions of their language. The priest Rufinus,who had been intimate with St. Jerome, and who had lived in retirement inSicily, where he died (410), translated the History of Eusebius into passableLatin; Sulpicivis Severus, his contemporarj, a more elegant and correctwriter, although born in Aquitaine, and who never left Gaul, where he hadfollowed the apostleship of St. Martin, composed an Abridgment of SacredHistory from the creation of the world to the year 410 a.d., and this excellentbook earned the surname of the Christian Sallust.
