The rest-fulness of power soft-ened their every mo-tion ; and a sunnytemperament informedthe very quality oftheir voices. Yet theyhad been born, and hadlived all their days, in the breathless, unpeaceful city. Ithought of the words of a man whohad gone from a AVestern country townto an Eastern city. He was a large em-ployer of labor. One thing I dont like about theEast, said he, is the expression on thefaces of the working-peoj^le ; they lookhard and fierce. They seem to grudgegiving you a decent greeting. You havean unpleasant feeling that they are yoursecret foes. I miss that open, kindly,manly look there was on our Westernworking-mens faces. There is an en-tirely different feeling here between theemployers and the working-people fromwhat there is there ; and the differenceis all for the worse !
