SAILOR JACK By Ezra Everett This treatment, in story form, depicting the temptations and difficulties ofseamen, serves to emphasize the importance and value of the work which theChurch is doing in her Seamens Institutes in New York, Philadelphia, San Fran-cisco, and other places. WHEN Sailor Jack came into thelittle California town where Ilived, and opened a candy storeand soda fountain, it was really quiteexciting, for the place was none toolively. He was rather a small man, withgrizzled hair, probably not much overforty, as I recall now, though he hadthe look of an old man, and to me, atten, he seemed very old indeed. Hehad a very peculiar gait; at times hewalked as though he were keepingone foot behind the other. My fatherfound me practicing the walk in thebackyard, and reproved me quiteseverely for mocking a persons pe-culiarities.
