Description
English: Royal Engineer looking for water, Western Front, during World War I. The original caption identifies this man as a Royal Engineer, although in the photograph he is wearing a woolly hat and does not look very military. The Royal Engineers had a huge range of responsibilities, from building and maintaining an infrastructure of camps, bridges and railways, to the organisation of the postal service and wireless communications.

The Royal Engineers had to provide safe and sufficient water and sanitation. This must have been particularly difficult during the frozen winter weather.]
[Original reads: 'One of the many jobs assigned to the R.E. Searching for water holes in the ice.']
