But as Wolfe stood conspicuous in the front rank,cheering his men, a musket ball struck his wrist. He wrapped ahandkerchief around the wounded limb, continued giving his orders,and soon put himself at the head of his grenadiers, who had fixedtheir bayonets for the charge, when he was hit by a ball in theupper part of the abdomen. He seemed scarcely to heed thisserious wound, and was giving his orders and encouraging his men,when a musket ball struck him in the breast and brought him to theground. General Monckton, the second in command, was danger-ously wounded by his side, and the command devolved on GeneralTownshend.
