Title |
sherd (exterior) |
||
Description |
English: Pottery rim sherd made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. There are two parallel obligue fingernail impressions on the upper surface of the rim. The fabric has inclusions of pale felspars, dark augite and mica and is mid-brown on the exterior and dark brown on the interior of the sherd. This type of decoration is seen on Grooved Ware vessels, dating from c.2900-2400 BC (Henrietta Quinnell, forthcoming).
Anna Brindley in Cleal & MacSween (1999) illustrates a similarly decorated Grooved Ware vessel from Stanton Harcourt in Oxfordshire, on page 141, Fig.14.3, No.3. |
