They captivate theignorant as well as the learned, and to themajority of beholders are wonderfully incom-prehensible and full of fascinating interest. On recommendation of Dr. E. V. Hayden, theeminent geologist and explorer, the YellowstoneNational Park was wisely set apart by Congress,in 1872, for the benefit and enjoyment of thepeople. The reservation, as the Park maymore properly be termed, lies mainly in thenorthwestern corner of Wyoming, and extendsslightly into Idaho and Montana. It is fifty-five miles long by sixty-five wide, and includes,therefore, 3,575 square miles, or 2,288,000 acres.The surface features present a great diversity ofcharacter, the lowlands bearing a general resem-blance to the parks of Colorado, and the rangesenclosing the vast region having the indescri-bable grandeur so characteristic of the RockyMountain system.
