English: Sideboard, wrought copper hinges and handles, upper part has two leaded glass cupboards and hammered copper sconce, oak body with dark stain. Inscription reads - "IT IS THE FAIR ACCEPTANCE THAT CREATES THE ENTERTAINMENT PERFECT NOT THE CATES" (from a Ben Johnson epigram "Inviting a Friend to Supper" - It is the fair acceptance, Sir, creates- The entertainment perfect - not the cates.) In 1883, Liberty opened its own Furnishing and Decoration Studio under the direction of Leonard Wyburd (dates unknown, but he retired in 1903) whose designs made Liberty style the toast of Europe at the end of the 19th century Leonard F Wyburd, the designer who ran Arthur Liberty’s Furnishing and Decoration Studio In 1883, Liberty and Co. opened its own Furnishing and Decoration Studio under the direction of Leonard Wyburd whose designs catapulted Liberty style to the height of fashion at the end of the 19th century. The sideboard’s carved motto is taken from "Inviting a Friend to Supper" by the Elizabethan poet Ben Johnson reads "IT IS THE FAIR ACCEPTANCE THAT CREATES THE ENTERTAINMENT PERFECT NOT THE CATES" to celebrate the company of friends. John Pearson was one of four founding members of the Guild of Handicraft, initiated in 1888 by Charles Robert Ashbee (b. 1863– d.1942). Pearson was the Guild’s leading metalworker.
