lUi Wmitint G. Frl~..n Pitch Lake 30 Sight-Seeing in South America the pitch does not stick. In these softer places the sur-face has a seamed appearance like that of an elephantshide. The more solid part of the asphalt is used for com-mercial purposes. It is dug up with picks and is throwninto the cars. It comes usually in big chunks, and oneof these a workman lifts onto his head and carries it to thecar. A space alongside of the track is dug down two orthree feet in one day, and the next morning the excava-tion is practically filled. This is repleted not by new,soft asphalt that pours in, but simply by a leveling upand down of the surrounding asphalt, much as happenswhen a pinch of putty is taken out of a putty ball. Millions of tons of asphalt have been shipped toAmerica and Europe for the making of streets, but thesupply is practically inexhaustible. The surface of thelake has been lowered only a few feet.
