Description |
Sir AJ Shepperd. During his 13 years at the helm of Wellcome Trust, Sir Alfred Shepperd oversaw the organisation’s most rapid period of expansion during a difficult time of global inflation. Under his stewardship Wellcome, now the world’s largest medical charity, developed and nurtured four leading blockbuster drugs — Zyloric, Septrin, Zovirax and Retrovir. The latter became the first anti-retroviral treatment of HIV/Aids and was to extend and improve the lives of thousands of Aids sufferers around the world while, in turn, boosting Wellcome’s share value significantly. Although controversial, Retrovir proved to be one of the most important vaccines of the modern age and is now used within a cocktail of anti-retroviral drugs Medical Photographic Library |
