ose adventures became a delightful heritage tothe little boy born into the Edinburgh family ofScott in 1771. Perhaps his natural liking forstrange and exciting events would have made himeven more eager than other children to be told fairystories and tales of real heroes of his own land. Buteven had this not been so, the way in which he wasforced to spend his early childhood was such thatentertainment of this kind was about all that hecould enjoy. He was not two years old when, aftera brief illness, he lost the use of one of his legs andthus became unable to run about as before, or evento stand. Soon afterward he was sent to his grand-fathers farm at Sandy-Knowe, where it was thoughtthat the country life would help him. There he spenthis days in listening to lively stories of Scotsmenwho had lived in the brave and rollicking fashion ofRobin Hood, in being read to by his aunt or in lyingout among the rocks, cared for by his grandfathersold shepherd. Except for his lameness, he grew so well andstrong that when he was about eight years old hewas placed with his brothers in the upper class ofthe Edinburgh grammar school, known as the HighSchool. Though he had had some lessons in Latinwith a private tutor, he was behind his class in thissubject, and being a high-spirited and sensitive boy,he felt rather keenly this disadvantage. Perhapsthe fact that he could not be one of the leaders ofhis class made him careless; at any rate, he couldnever be depended upon to prepare his lesson, andat no time did he make a consistently good record.However, he found not a little comfort for his fail-ure as a student in his popularity as a storytellerand kind-hearted comrade.
