Vinton,and Joshua R. Giddings, were the leading membersfrom Ohio. From Pennsylvania came David Wilmot of provisofame; Thaddeus Stevens, in later years the undisputedmaster of the House, and Joseph R. Chandler. JamesL. Orr, of South Carolina, was the best known of theSouth Carolina delegation. From Tennessee cameAndrew Johnson, later an accidental President; Mere-dith P. Gentry, a sterling Whig, whom Johnson defeatedfor Governor, and Isham G. Harris, who had nearlyfifty years of public life before him. Harris was electedthe year that John Quincy Adams died. Adams hadbeen in public life most of the time from the Revolutionuntil 1848, and Harris served in public capacity fornearly fifty years longer, dying a Senator in 1897. Thustwo official lives more than compassed a Century. Inthe Virginia delegation were Thomas S. Bocock andJames A. Seddon, later Jefferson Davis Secretary ofW^ar. One can see that this was a body of strong men, evenif not so brilliant or so well known as the Senators.
