III. »The FIRST GENTLEMAN>.Karikatyr öfver Georg IV af G. Cruikshank. ett ondt öga till »the Corinthians», d. v. s. eleganterna, som omkring1820 lefde röfvare i London, och han hittar verkligt elaka linier föratt gyckla med deras egenkärlek och tillgjordhet (bild 112).Det var ej minst inom bokillustrationens område George Cruik-shank skulle göra sitt namn kändt. Otaliga äro de sagor ochspökhistorier, dikter och romaner, som han illustrerat medsina etsningar och träsnitt. Träsnittet lefde nu upp igen efterläng hvila. Dickens roman Oliver Twist blef 1838 illustrerad af Cruik-shank. Detta gaf anledning till en af dessa ändlösa tvister, somvoro så utmärkande för konstnären. Han påstod sig ha gifvit upp-slaget till hela den berömda romanen, öfverdrifvande på det 133 ENGLAND OMKRING iSoO.

112. SÅNGFÅGLARNA ELLER EN DANDYTRIO.Karikatyr öfver engelskt snobberi af G. Cruikshank. 1819. mest fantastiska sätt värdet af de infall och uppslag han kommitmed. Detta bragte honom i harnesk mot alla författare, för-läggare och tecknare. Det är i denna sorts teckning af moderntengelskt lif, hvilken de Cruikshankska Oliver-Twist-teckningarnarepresentera, som John Leechs konst hade sina rötter. Med tid-ningen Punch, hvilken 1841 började utkomma, ville den het-lefrade Cruikshank af flera skäl ej ha något att göra, ehurumånga af hans teckningar skulle ha passat utmärkt i dennapublikation. En sådan är den vid slutet af 1840-talet tillkomna»Min hustru är en begåfvad kvinna», där han skämtar med deemanciperadc damerna och skildrar otrefnaden i ett hem, dären skrifvande dam är härskarinna (bild 113). Dråplig är hennestankfulla afböjande gest med något af: Tyst, stilla — nu kommersnilleblixten. ICn aldrig så kort framställning af George Cruikshanks lifvore
