Snake bracelet fragment, copper alloy
Description
English: Roman cast copper alloy snake bracelet fragment. Roughly one third of the flattened penannular bracelet survives, including one of the two stylised snake head terminals. The hoop is flat on the back, and slightly convex on the front, and decorated with a plain grooved line border. Length (as bent) c.28mm, width (across head of snake) 10.94mm, width (across hoop) 7.54mm, thickness (across head) 3.34mm, thickness (across hoop) 1.88mm, weight 6.62g. This is a Johns Type Bii bracelet, which were "in fashion from the first century to the early third century, if not longer" (Johns, 1996, "The Jewellery of Roman Britain", UCL Press, p109-111 & 45).
