English: A sniper from the Counter Improvised Explosive Device Task force engages insurgents from the back of a Viking All Terrain Protected Mobility Vehicle operated by the Royal Dragoon Guards Viking Group.
Calvary soldiers from the Viking Group, the Royal Dragoon Guards (RDG) were working alongside soldiers from 21 Engineer Regiment and continued to defeat insurgent attempts to disrupt the building of Route Trident in Nahr-e-Saraj south. Once completed, the road will link the provincial capital Lashkar Gah with the economic hub of Gereshk, providing a safe and durable transit route for the civilian population and ISAF forces across the province. The Viking Group has been providing over-watch and protection to the soldiers from 1 Troop, 1st Armoured Engineer Squadron from Ripon, north Yorkshire and Afghan contractors as they work on the new road. As the build has developed over the last few months, insurgent activity to prevent it has increased. British forces have come under daily attacks as well as improvised explosive device (IED) strikes around the build, but have rebutted insurgent offences and continued to make steady progress each day.
