Title |
soldino of Michele Steno (reverse) |
||
Description |
English: Silver Venetian soldino of Doge Michele Steno (1400-1413), Type 5.
The Venetian soldino, meaning "little shilling", circulated unofficially as halfpennies in England during the 15th and early 16th centuries, due to a lack of small change in the country at the time. They were nicknamed "galyhalpens" or galley-halfpence after the "galley-men" who imported them: the merchants on the Venetian galley fleet who came to England each summer. There were two main influxes of soldini, the first under Doge Michele Steno (like this coin) and the second under Doge Loredan (1501-1521). |
