me the repository of that noble collection of works of art, of whichthe very ruins are ornaments now to several principal cabinets. The collection contained, whenentire, 37 statues, 128 busts, and 250 inscribed marbles, exclusive of sarcophagi, altars, gems,fragments, &c., which he had paid for, but could never obtain permission to remove from Rome.A view of the statue gallery forms the background to Vansomers portrait of the Earl, and a viewof the pictiue gallei-y to Vansomers portrait of his Countess. Here Hollar was lodged, and herehe engraved several views of the house, and drew his well-known view of London, as seen from theroof. Thomas, Earl of Arundel, died 1646, and at the restoration in 1660, his house and marbleswere restored to his grandson, who, at the instigation of Evelyn, gave the library to the RoyalSociety, and the inscribed marbles, still known as the Arundelian Collection, to the University ofOxford. The donor of the marbles died in 1677.— Walj^olcs Anecdotes.

CLEMENTS LANE, STRAND. BEAUFORT BUILDINGS. 151 November 14th, 1635, at the age of 152 years and 9 months, havingoutHved nine sovereigns, and part of the reign of the tenth. Hewas dissected by Harvey, who attributed Parrs death to inflammationof the hmgs, brought on by the impurity of a London atmosphereand sudden change of diet. BEAUFORT BUILDINGS Occupy a site which formerly sustained a palace belonging to theBishops of Carlisle, and then called Carlisle House. It was ex-changed by the Bishops with Henry VHI. for Rochester Placeat Lambeth. The king gave it to his favourite Bedford, who made it his resi-dence. It then passed, by purchase, to the Marquis of Worcester,who wrote The Century of Inventions : it was then known asWorcester House, and thence came into the hands of the Mar-quiss eldest son, who was created Duke of Beaufort; its name wasthen changed to Beaufort House.* Lord Clarendon lived here whilsthis house was being built at the West; and here, in 1660, wasmarried Ann Hyde,
