His native Statehad just reason to be proud of him, for he was not only thesecond officer of highest rank, from Georgia, in the old army,but was the author of one of the best works on military tacticsthat had been published. In 1834:, Hardee entered West Point as a cadet, and gradu-ated with honor four years afterwards. He was then gazettedas second-lieutenant, in theSecond United States dragoons,and was sent to Florida, where he served for two years. Onthe 3d of December, 1839, he was promoted to a first-lieu-tenancy, and was sent by the Secretary of War to the cele-brated military school of St. Maur, about eighty leagues fromParis. There, he was regularly attached to the cavalry de-partment of the French army, and, after completing his studies,-making himself a thoroughly good officer, with a perfectknowledge of that branch of the service—he returned to theUnited States, bringing a flattering letter of recommendation

LT GEN. HARDEE. \ \ LIEUTENANT-GENEKAL WILLIAM J. HARDEE. 459 from Marshall Oudinot to the Secretary of War at Wash- ington. Lieutenant Hardees regiment was now stationed on theWestern frontier, and quickly rejoining it, he soon becameactively employed in defending the advanced settlements fromIndian depredations. On the 18th of September, 18±4, he waspromoted to be a captain of dragoons, and then accompaniedGeneral Taylor across the Rio Grande to the Mexican cam-paign. There, his company was the first to engage the enemy,at a place called Currwitos, where, after vainly endeavoringwith his gallant little band to cut his way through the Mexicanranks, he was overwhelmed by superior numbers, and takenprisoner. He had to remain a captive for several months, andthen was exchanged in time to take part in the siege of Mon-terey. For this and other engagements he was promotedmajor of cavalry on the 25th of March, having then joined theforces under General Scott, at Yera Cruz, and displayingg
