proved amost interesting one to competitors and judges. The large first prize offered was a spur to thewit and ingenuity of the former, and if theycould not win the first prize, certainly thesecond, third, and fourth prizes were not to besneezed at! The main faults in most ofthe answers submitted were, as usual, first, apainful lack of meter, and second, great care-lessness shown in carrying out excellent ideas. You must all remember that although poetrycan do without rhyme, it absolutely refuses See also page 12 to do without meter! And also remember thatan idea for an advertisement is not everything ;it must also be well carried out. A clever, striking sentence in an advertisement must bearranged in a clever, striking way. The following little verse is good in justthis manner. It is sharp, short, and to thepoint: Cupid was the god of love;Though he always lived aboveHe had tasted Lowneys Candy,And he thought that it was dandy ! *Jth Lastscene hat ends this eventful history ii THE ST. NICHOLAS LEAGUE Mercury seemed to be a favorite characterby the number of times that his swiftness, agility or cleverness were called upon by theyoung advertisers. We are told of a visit hemade to King Pluto, and his amazement onfinding the palace in the under-world brilliantlylighted. On his inquiring the cause of Plutoschange from the darkness of his halls, Plutoexplains that it was due to a box of GorhamsSilver Polish which Venus had sent him. Wecan imagine the attractive illustration thatmight be used with this advertisement: Plutositting on his throne, polishing his sword withGorhams Silver Polish, in a blaze of light re-flected from the jewels, armor, etc., whichhang on the walls. This scene is excellentlydescribed in the advertisement. A very goodsuggestion of such an illustration accompaniedthe contribution. There is something deliciously funny in theidea of Jupiter quieting his nerves by drink-ing Postum. JUPITER AND POS
