Though he falls into bad company, he finds a good friend, and benefitsby his brief experience at sea. Chapter I. FRISCO KID, AND THE NEW BOY. Frisco Kid was discontented—discontentedand disgusted ; though this would have seemedimpossible to the boys who fished from the dockabove and envied him mightily. He frowned,got up from where he had been sunning him-self on top of the Dazzlers cabin, and kickedoff his heavy rubber boots. Then he stretched himself on the narrow side-deck and dangledhis feet in the cool salt water. Now, that s freedom, thought the boyswho watched him. Besides, those long sea-boots, reaching the hips and buckled to theleather strap about the waist, held a strangeand wonderful fascination for them. They didnot know that Frisco Kid did not possess suchthings as shoes ; that the boots were an old pairof Pete Le Maires and were three sizes too

The cause of Frisco Kids discontent wasthose very boys who sat on the string-pieceand admired him; but his disgust was the re-sult of quite another event. Further, the Daz-zler was short one in its crew, and he had to domore work than was justly his share. He didnot mind the cooking, nor the washing downof the decks and the pumping; but when itcame to the paint-scrubbing and dish-washing,he rebelled. He felt that he had earned theright to be exempt from such scullion work.That was all the green boys were fit for; whilehe could make or take in sail, lift anchor, steer,and make landings. Stan from uner! Pete Le Maire, cap-tain of the Dazzler and lord and master ofFrisco Kid, threw a bundle into the cockpitand came aboard by the starboard rigging. Come!
