equine freak, Billy, was on thealert, and greeted us with such a series of whin-nies that we feared he was trying somethingnew in solos. We built a fire and prepared supper with theusual accessory of strong coffee, and at elevenoclock were asleep under wet blankets. Butit was a glorious sleep, and when the sunshine woke us the next morning we felt greatlyrefreshed, though still very weak and stiff. After breakfast we repacked the burro, andstarted for camp in Estes Park. Billy did notneed any urging now and showed great enthu-siasm in jumping over fallen trees ; so much, infact, that he threw himself down continually. At eleven oclock we reached camp, and spentthe next few days in resting and eating withcommendable energy. We determined hereafter to heed the adviceof the old stage-driver and let the sun ham-mer that snow six weeks longer before we triedany more mountain climbing. For my own part, I am willing to let himhammer it six centuries longer before repeat-ing that experience.
