Charlotte Street, the sign of a wholesale iron-mongers establishment. The dog is in the actof eating out of a three-legged iron pot which ithas overturned. There were also The Black Dog and TheDog and Duck. The White Greyhoundwas the sign of John Harrison in St. PaulsChurchyard, a bookseller who published someof Shaksperes early works. The golden grasshopper on the tower of theRoyal Exchange has been for nearly three anda half centuries a London landmark as familiaras the cross on St. Pauls or the dragon on BowChurch steeple. Sir Thomas Gresham, a royal agent in threesuccessive reigns, founded the Exchange in thereign of Elizabeth. He erected at his own ex-pense a beautiful structure in the Flemish styleof architecture, with shops on the first floor. Abell-tower, crowned by a huge grasshopper,stood on one side of the chief entrance. Thebell in this tower summoned the merchants attwelve oclock noon and six oclock evening.During the Great Fire of 1666 the building wastotally destroyed.
