Dear St. Nicholas : During a warm summer day,:we gently glide down the river or across the ripplirlake, there is one insect that is sure toattract our attention, both on account ofthe brightness of its colors and the easeand speed of its flight. I mean thedragon-fly, sometimes called the devilsdarning-needle. Let us inquire into thelife-history of this remarkable insect,which should certainly be classed onlysecond to butterflies and moths in thebeauty of its hues. In spring and early summer, if a netbe dragged over the muddy bottom ofsome pond or river and the contents beexamined, there will often be found anugly creature struggling hard to escape.Its appearance is shown in the illustra-tion. This is a dragon-fly nymph, as itis called. This nymph is provided withhairs which cover his body all over, andto these hairs adhere the decomposedmat
