Putting down the empty platter before theastounded host, amid the quizzical surprise of the staff-officers, she told her story of the sol-dier-thief, and then, overcome with mortification,turned with a sob to apologize to Washington.Arising from his place, he took her hand andgallantly kissed it, saying: Think no more ofit, my dear madam, with a motion toward thewell furnished table; surely I can say withyour countryman, Sir Philip Sidney, His needis greater than mine.
