It starts at midnight, or even before; andall day long fire-crackers are going off in thestreets of every city, town, and village of theSouth, from Virginia to Louisiana. A North-ern boy, waking up suddenly in New Orleansor Mobile or Atlanta, would think he was inthe midst of a rousing Fourth-of-July celebra-tion. In some of the towns the brass bandscome out and add to the jollity of the day bymarching around and playing My Marylandand Dixie; while the soldier companies pa-rade up and down the streets to the strains ofjoyous music and fire salutes with cannons andrifles. To the girls and boys of the South, Christmas HOW UNCLE SAM OBSERVES CHRISTMAS. I48 is the noisiest and jolliest day of the year. TheFourth of July does nt compare with it. They take it for granted that allthe white folks they know will give thempresents; and with grinning faces they areup bright and early, asking for Christmusgif, mistah; Christmus gif, missus. No one thinks of refusing them, and at the end of theday they are richer and happier than at anyother time during the whole year. Except for the jingleof sleigh-bells and thepresence of Jack Frost,a Christmas in the Southis in other ways verymuch like that in theNorth. The houses aredecorated with greens,mistletoe hangs abovethe doorways, SantaClaus conies down thechimneys and fills thewaiting stockings, whileChristmas dinner is notcomplete without the fa-miliar turkey and cran-berry sauce and pies.
