But of all strange nests, the one that haspleased me most is that of the Indian paradise-fish, kept in an ordinary house aquarium. Thisfish is novel, not only on account of its brilliantmarkings, but it also breathes air, and does not,like other fish, depend for its oxygen on that setfree in the water by aquatic plants. But themost remarkable thing about it is its method ofbuilding a nest. These amazing nests not onlyfloat, but are formed of air bubbles. With itsmouth the fish blows the little bubbles, and coatsthem with an adhesive or mucilaginous substance,so that they adhere together and form a floating,fairy-like mass, in which the eggs are laid, andin which the young are hatched. Occasionally ayoung fish will slip out, or apparently tumble out,of his home of bubbles, and circle away, finallyfalling to the botto
