We hear a great deal, from time to time, about thestudy of stamps, and young collectors, as well as thosewho are older, desire to know what is meant by this.Looking at stamps, and merely noting slight differencesbetween them, is not studying them in the way whichproduces the most valuable results. It is necessary,in order to acquire much valuable knowledge of stamps,that considerable numbers of them be accumulated forpurposes of study. It is not necessary that these shouldbe rare stamps. If, for instance, one wishes to studythe stamps of the United States of the issues between1870 and 1890, a great deal of information may be se-cured by examining a number of the common three-cent green stamps issued during these years.
