A team made up of players whohad never seen nor read of a game, and hadnever had any instruction outside of the rules,would have no hit-and-run plays; no squeezeplays; probably no men caught flat-footed offbase; no double steals; no delayed steals; noshifting of the infield according to the runnerson, the score, and the outs; no signaling; nosignal-stealing; no hidden-ball tricks; no stall-ing tricks, by which a player is led to think aball is fielded in one place when it is really fieldedelsewhere —in fact, the very heart and soul ofbase-ball would be missing. The batter wouldhit or walk and patiently wait for his successorto hit or walk to advance him. Runs would be inexact proportion to hits, and outs would be madeonly in the stereotyped ways, and—nobody wouldcare either to play or to see the game !
