e far-ther end of the hall. On either hand stood thepeople waiting to greet the happy man who hadwon their Princess. All down the sides the torches flamed, cast-ing fitful shadows up among the massive raftersof carven oak, black with age. As the lightflickered upon them it lit up grinning monstersthat supported the huge timbers: heads of grif-fins and dragons that, once seen, peopled thedarkness long after for terrified children. It fellon banners pendent from the walls, their threadsof scarlet and blue and gold now gleaming in thelight, now hanging somber in the shadow. Itshone below on burnished shields and mirroreditself in a thousand tiny points on helm andcuirass, mace and spear. It lay softly on theuncovered heads of the silent, waiting people.
