Text Appearing Before Image:
iling, wagging his tail, and licking his jaws. Now, when Dauntless goes walking with me,he goes on a chain—a chain which is a compli-ment to his strength. At other times he lives inthe orchard near the prairie-wolf, and, like Rom-ulus, can run the length of a long wire, stretchedbetween two distant trees. So the only creatureshe can war upon are those which are rash enoughto come within the boundaries of his limitedrange, and as these are chiefly woodchucks, myneighbors find no fault. Last winter I was lecturing on wild animals inthe big Auditorium at Concord, New Hampshire, and at the close of the talk, I told the audiencethat I had one more picture to show them. Asthe lights were turned up, a gigantic timber-wolfstalked onto the stage beside me, arose until hisbig paws rested lightly on my shoulder, andlooked across that sea of faces with a strangelycalm expression which many translated to mean,You touch him if you dare. It was Daunt-less. MOTHER GOOSE CONTINUED BY ANNA MARION SMITH
