Quick as a flash, Alice took out a littlehandkerchief from her jacket pocket, and wavedit to the doll in return. By and by they came to a brook, and the bargewas stopped that the horses might drink. Thehorses names were Arithmetic and Geog-raphy, but they were called Mettie and Jog, forshort. Alice was thirsty, too, so Elizabeth jumpedout of the barge with her, and filled an acorncup with the cool, clear water, and held it to thedolls lips. Alice wore a pink dimity frock, and a cunninglittle sunbonnet to match. Over the frock shewore a white knitted jacket with pink buttons. After about two hours of driving merrily alongpleasant country roads, they came to HadleysMeadows.
