Text Appearing Before Image:
in vain that was fit and right for aman to do or give. His wife wrote, after hisdeath, that in him the age of chivalry had livedagain, that he fulfilled every ideal of a most trueand perfect knight. He had a hot temper, impa-tient and proud, but he had a tremendous controlover it, and over himself, and a heart the biggest and kindest imaginable. He had a perfect pas-sion for knowledge of all kinds, particularlythings that affected men and women and children. I can only give you the slightest impression ofa character so varied and so full of action, buteven a brief glimpse of a man like Charles Kings-ley is worth something. It is like stepping sud-denly out into a fresh garden full of sunlight, where plants and flowers crowd the beds, wheretrees rustle in the wind, birds sing, and happy, healthy, generous life is in full swing, givingitself joyously for the glory of God. There wasnothing stuffy, nor dark, nor small, nor cowardlyin any minute of Charles Kingsleys life or inchof his being.
