We walk past it. We driveby it. We cross the square in front of it. We do not runinto it, but we do not see it. There are many Bostonianswho do not know there is a statue in Park sq. . The mechanical seeing eye acts in the same way, auto-matically, when a shadow is thrown across its focus. Wegenerally respond involuntarily when an object obstructsour path. We are aware of the existence of thousands ofthings, but the conscious pleasure and satisfaction of seeingwith appreciation is often lost.
