Text Appearing Before Image:
ncolns birthday wasnot customary. At least, the records in City Hallcould throw no light on the subject. But theCity Council remembered otherwise. Subscrip-tions were hastily obtained, a wreath was hastilyacquired, a delegation was hastily chosen, anorator was hastily enlisted. Then, as dusk de-scended, a handful of city officials hastily leftCity Hall for the statue. The oration remainedun-orated, for there was no audience. Few ifany pedestrians paused to see what it was allabout. Thus Bostons municipal and official gesturein honor of Abraham Lincoln, casting doubt onthe infallibility of the old adage, Better latethan never. Surely someone in authority in thecity must have recognized that Lincoln is hon-ored more by silence than by an eleventh-houraffair, hurriedly conceived and more hurriedlyexecuted. Anyway, the public cant accuse the Boston city fathers of wasting time or public funds on Lincolns birthday celebration. — J MAYOR MANSFIELD PLACES WREATHON STATUE OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN
