Evans soldierly instinct had penetrated the designof the Federal commander, and his ready assumption ofresponsibility threw a strong force across the path of theturning column, and gave time for his superiors to altertheir dispositions and bring up the reserves. The Federal force opposite the Stone Bridge consistedof a whole division ; and its commander. General Tyler,had been instructed to divert attention, by means of avigorous demonstration, from the march of Hunters andHeintzlemans divisions to a ford near Sudley Springs.Part of the Fifth Division was retained in reserve atCentreville, and part threatened the fords over Bull Eunbelow the Stone Bridge.
