Hearing this,Aumerle breathlessly inquires what has become ofhis father, while Richard declares they must talkof none but mournful subjects hereafter, for allhe once owned has passed into Bolingbrokes hands,and nothing now remains for him save melancholyand death! Reminding Richard that Vise men neer sitand wail their woes, but try instead to preventthem, Carlisle and Aumerle urge him to make newefforts, even meeting Bolingbroke, if necessary, onthe battle-field. This news makes Richardregret ever having left England, and propose towithdraw to Flint castle, to brood over his sorrowsand losses, bitterly advising his followers henceaway from Richards night to Bolingbrokes fairday. The next scene is played before Flint castle, whereBolingbroke learns of the Welsh desertion and ofthe landing of the King. When Northumberlandadds that Richard cannot be far away, York rebukeshim for not saying King Richard, as heretofore.After some dispute on the present propriety ofsuch a mode of address, Bolingbroke bids thesewordy antagonists cease arguing and listen to Percysnews. It now transpires that the King, Salisbury,Aumerle and others are in Flint castle, which re-fuses to open its gates.
