land, now a part of Argyle, was once invaded by the Norwegians who hadconquered the Orkneys, the Hebrides, and made several conquests in thenorth of Scotland. There was living in one of the wild caves of Morven at the time a Scottishchief by the name of Somerled, who was urged by his followers to drive outthe Norwegians. He knew it would be useless to attempt this in open fight with his smallforce, so he planned a stratagem. He ordered a herd of cattle that werequietly pasturing in the valley to be slain and skinned, and with only thispreparation awaited the approach of the Norsemen. As soon as he saw Scotland. 163 a portion of the foo in motion lie caused his men to march several timesround the hill where they lay descending each time into a small glen under-neath, from which, unknown to the foe was a path leading to the summiton the other side.
