States, as from East Tennessee, NorthernArkansas, and some other places. 12. In the matter of arms the North had an immenseadvantage over the South. All the foundries for themanufacture of arms, except one cannon foundry atRichmond, were in the Northern States, and in theirarmories were stored allthe new and improved weaponsof war. The Southern States had arsenals, but mthem were only arms of the old and rejected models.The South had no powder factories, no navy to protecther ports, and no merchant ships for foreign com-merce. One hundred and fifty thousand small armswere all that could be found in the Southern Confede-racy, including both sides of the Mississippi. Nearlyall the muskets were the old flint-lock altered to per-cussion. If soldier§ enough were called into the fieldto handle these arms there would not be ten rounds ofammunition to the man. During the first year of thewar there were not arms enough in the ConfederateStates to supply the men who desired to enter the army.

The Slaves During the War.—The conduct of theslaves during the war gives strong proof of the kindfeeling that existed between them and their masters.The great majority of them remained on the plantationsand by their labor supplied the armies in the field.Many negro men went with their young masters to war,faithfully waited on them, nursed them when sick,and, if they died in camp or in battle, returned with thelifeless bodies to lay them beside their kindred deadin the family burying-ground. 14.
